When friends gave my sweet sister a little Kindle for Christmas this last year I knew immediately I wanted to make her a pretty case to both protect and prettify it!
I was able to do that a week or two ago and it went together in a day, surprisingly.
I didn't use a pattern but I did look at a few tutorials and patterns that I'd saved on Pinterest for just such an occasion.
We picked out this pretty brown & aqua floral print from our collection of fabrics - just right for Jessica! :D The rest of the fabric is being turned into a tiered skirt for Jessica too, so her Kindle will match.
We lined the cover with this pretty aqua and brown dot print to match. *bliss*
I made her case to have a little inner pocket where she can keep some paper and such to jot down notes. Very important for a writer on the move. ;) And her Kindle fits nice and snug inside on the right.
Making these corner triangles to hold the Kindle was the hardest part to figure out. I wasn't sure the size would be right when I made them, but when I sewed them up it fit almost perfectly! A tad too snug, but it keeps the Kindle from falling out and it's not too hard to get it in and out of the cover, so it turned out well in the end. There's even space so she can plug her cord in there at the bottom without taking off her case - score!
I thought it would be nice for Jessica to be able to keep her cord with her Kindle, especially if she is taking it somewhere, so I made her a little pocket on the back as well to keep that in.
{This fabric is too cute or what?!}
Jessica and I talked about what decoration and closure feature she wanted. She had wanted a ruffle but with the pocket on the back we found this was a better option. I took a piece of scrap elastic I had, made a small casing twice the size of the elastic, and sewed it on at the top and bottom all stretched out. Each end is sewn into the back at the top and bottom and the elastic pulls around to the front, creating a cute "ruffly" closure to secure everything.
My little sis loves it. She's even sweet enough to let me borrow her Kindle once in awhile so between Mommy's Nook (given by my aunt and Grandma the year before) and Jessica's Kindle I'm getting more of my free e-books read of late. :) Speaking of which, I should have a book review post coming to you all next week - keep on the lookout!
Blessings in Christ,
~Rachel~
